Old Testament: Course Syllabus

This course is an introduction to biblical studies and the composition of the Old Testament.  Emphasis will be on the tools of biblical study and their application to the books of the Old Testament.  Major themes of the Old Testament will receive special attention.

 

Week  1:         Introduction.  Inspiration, revelation, inerrancy and scripture.  Historical-
                        critical method.  Translations of Scripture.  The geographical/historical
                        context of the Old Testament.  Contextualizing the Scriptures. 

Week  2:         The Pentateuch, with special emphasis on Genesis and Exodus

Week  3:         The Covenant: It’s implications, problems, and legacy. 

Week  4:         The life, worship, and prayer of Israel.  The split of the Kingdoms. 

Week  5:         The Prophets, Part I: The former prophets and the Assyrian invasion.  The
                        rise of Babylon.
 
Week  6:         The Prophets, Part II:  The major prophets. 

Week  7:         The Impact of Hellenism on Judaism.  The late writings

Week  8:         The meaning of the Old Testament in relationship to Christianity, church
                        and worship.  Evaluation.
