Social Justice – Course Syllabus Course Description: Social Justice focuses on Catholic Social Teaching as a framework
Week 1: Introduction. Life and dignity of the human person Identify the poor and powerless of our world and community. Racial and Economic justice. Prejudice and capital punishment. Week 2: Call to family, community and participation. Rights and roles of family. Support for the worker and family. Conditions of Labor. Social Sins. Week 3: Rights and responsibilities. Economic justice and policy issues. Church and U.S. economy and developing nations. Promote theological reflection, service, advocacy and community. Integrate social justice into one’s spirituality by inviting personal conversion through changes in life-style. Week 4: Options for the poor and vulnerable. Concerns for the working class – readjustment of the relationship between workers and management. Concern for less economically developed countries. Role of religion in technological and economic development. Week 5: The dignity of work and the rights of workers. Labor and personal dignity. Conditions of labor – duties of workers and employers. Protection of rights and fair wages. The spirituality of work. Week 6: Solidarity. Encourage and promote the dignity of and solidarity with the poor through networking within the parish Christian community and beyond. Church’s teaching and work to promote world peace. Week 7: Care for God’s Creation. “Green” living. The effects of environmental blights. Religious and ethical dimensions of the environmental problems and the roles of developed countries. Use of our possessions. Week 8: Theological Reflection on Catholic social teaching.
