History

Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg replaced the annual Ogdensburg Peruvian Apostolate collection which supported our missionaries in St. Martin de Porres Parish, Mollendo, Peru.  2003 marked the closing of the Ogdensburg Peruvian Apostolate and the last summer for the appeal to directly aid our missionaries.

While our Peruvian mission has closed and the Peruvian appeal has ended, there is still the need for financial assistance to support and promote the pastoral work of the Catholic Church.

The Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg enabled us to contribute to the collection for the Church in Latin America which is sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Donations were also made in support of our North Country natives who are serving in mission territory in Africa, Nicaragua and Ecuador. Due to our parishioners’ generosity, Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg has been able to send funding for the following:

  • St. Martin de Porras, Mollendo, PERU
  • North Country Mission of Hope, Managua, Nicaragua
  • Working Boys Center, Quito, Ecuador
  • Diocese of Lugazi, Uganda, East Africa
  • Hands Together, Haiti
  • Augustinian Mission work in Africa
  • Missionaries of the Sacred Heart Community in Columbia
  • Salesian Lay Missions; Ferrando Speech/Hearing Center, India

Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg appeal will be used for the following purposes.

1) to provide continued financial support of our former mission parish in Mollendo, Peru

2) to support the U.S. Bishop’s annual appeal for Latin America; and

3) to help any other missionary projects throughout the world that the Diocese of Ogdensburg might deem appropriate as part of its evangelization effort.

An opportunity for you to support the missionary endeavors of the Diocese of Ogdensburg will be given annually during the month of July.  Parishes within the diocese will pray for the recipients and take up a collection to provide funding for projects that include catechetical and lay leadership programs.

Missionary Cooperation Plan

Darcie with Children

North County Mission of Hope Trip to Nicaragua

The Diocese of Ogdensburg participates in the Missionary Cooperation Plan which introduces the parishes to a real-life missionary who represents a mission cause from a far away place.  In doing so, it serves as a preview for the global celebration of World Mission Sunday.  It also makes the needs of the Missions more real and more personal, as the faithful of the parish have an opportunity to relate to this visiting missionary.

The goal of inviting participants into the Missionary Cooperation Plan is that of Evangelization.  The Pontifical Mission Societies are all about Evangelization – that is why the societies were founded and that is what they do best.  The goal is to spread the “Good News” of Jesus Christ to those who are waiting to hear about Him.  There are still many areas of the world where His name has never been heard or His saving presence in the Eucharist has never been witnessed.  The Missionary Cooperation Plan ultimately exists to support these basic evangelization works around the world.

In the summer of even years, parishes on the Eastern side Deaneries:  Franklin, Clinton, Adirondack, Essex, Hamilton/Herkimer, of the diocese will welcome missionaries listed below.  In the summer of the odd years, parishes on Western side Deaneries:  Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence.
